Ok, here's a little question for everyone. I've got this idea for a novel, but it is based on another book. Now, writing a bit of fan fiction or whatnot probably falls under "fair use" and such in the copyright department. Writing an entire novel (and then trying to get it published and such) doesn't. What do I do? Drop the idea entirely? Modify the idea enough that it doesn't look like I'm working in the same area as the source of the inspiration? I'm not sure what to do. I'm not sure that I can make enough changes to the premise and still keep the feel that I'm looking for. I suppose I'll have to try though.
